Did you know that weight loss drugs can bring health problems?
It is more common than one imagines to use drugs without a prescription in search of weight loss. Be it pharmaceutical drugs or even manipulated drugs, some substances present in these products can cause several side effects such as hypertension, tachycardia and increase the chances of a heart attack. Who makes the alert is Dr. Abrão Cury, cardiologist at HCor – Hospital do Coração.
It is widely reported that obesity is one of the main public health problems today and the enemy of a healthy heart, compromising the quality and life expectancy of longevity. However, the search for quick weight loss at any cost without the assistance of a professional also offers serious risks to cardiorespiratory health.
“Although they are banned in Europe and the USA, for example, drugs such as sibutramine are still consumed in considerable quantities in Brazil, where they are often also taken without a prescription,” reveals Dr. Abrão Cury.
Sibutramine, do you lose weight?
When ingested, sibutramine causes an increase in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate. “Therefore, patients with heart disease or uncontrolled blood pressure should avoid using sibutramine at all costs. After all, the medication can worsen your health condition and cause high risk situations. In specific cases, however, cardiac patients can only use sibutramine under medical supervision ”, warns the cardiologist.
In addition, the substance also causes several other side effects such as headaches, dry mouth, mood swings, insomnia, depression, constipation, irritation, chemical and psychological dependence. “It is not a good deal to look for shortcuts when trying to lose weight. It is always best to opt for the traditional way. That is, to practice physical activity on a regular basis, maintain a balanced diet and abandon harmful habits such as smoking and alcoholism, since they also damage the heart ”, he advises. “With discipline and due effort, it is possible to lose weight in a healthy way and obtain a better quality of life”, concludes the doctor.
